Hope in hard times: what the Bible says when life falls apart

Short answer: the Bible doesn’t promise that hard times won’t come; it promises that God stays near in them. Biblical hope is not a feeling that everything will turn out fine, but trust in a faithful God who is “near to those who have a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18). Here are five verses to hold onto, each with a breath prayer.

1. God is close to the brokenhearted

“Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”

Psalm 34:18

You don’t have to feel strong to be held. Breath prayer: breathe in “You are near,” breathe out “I am held.”

2. His mercies are new every morning

“It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his mercies don’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22–23

These words were written in the ruins of Jerusalem. Hope here is not denial; it is a decision to remember who God is. Breath prayer: “New mercy… for today.”

3. Hope is an anchor

“This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast”

Hebrews 6:19

An anchor doesn’t stop the storm; it keeps you from drifting. Breath prayer: “Hold me… steady.”

4. Bring your anxiety to God

“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6–7

Paul wrote this from prison. Name what you’re carrying, out loud, to God. Breath prayer: “Your peace… guard my heart.”

5. Strength for the waiting

“but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31

Some seasons you soar, some you just walk. Both count. Breath prayer: “Renew… my strength.”
