Bible verses for sleep: what to pray when you can’t sleep
Short answer: the best-known Bible verse for sleep is Psalm 4:8: “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.” Other comforting verses for restless nights are Proverbs 3:24, Psalm 121:3–4, 1 Peter 5:7 and Psalm 56:3. Read one slowly in bed, hand your worries to God one by one, and let your breathing slow down. If sleeplessness goes on for weeks, talk to a doctor too.
1. Lying down in peace
“In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.”
Psalm 4:8
David wrote this psalm while under pressure from people who doubted him. Safety here doesn’t come from a quiet life; it comes from God. Breath prayer: breathe in “In peace,” breathe out “I lie down.”
2. Sweet sleep without fear
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid. Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.”
Proverbs 3:24
This is wisdom’s promise to a life that trusts God. It isn’t a guarantee of eight hours; it’s an invitation to stop bracing for the worst. Breath prayer: “Not afraid… sweet sleep.”
3. God doesn’t sleep, so you can
“He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.”
Psalm 121:3–4
You don’t have to stay awake to keep watch over your problems. Someone else is on duty tonight. Breath prayer: “You keep watch… I can rest.”
4. Give him the worries on your mind
“casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7
Name each worry that keeps looping, one at a time, and picture handing it over. You can pick it up again in the morning if you need to, but you don’t have to hold it all night. Breath prayer: “I give you this… you care for me.”
5. When fear wakes you at 3 a.m.
“When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.”
Psalm 56:3
The psalm doesn’t say “I am never afraid.” It says what to do when fear comes. Breath prayer: “When I’m afraid… I trust you.”

Questions people ask
What Bible verse helps you sleep?
Psalm 4:8 is the classic bedtime verse: “In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you alone, Yahweh, make me live in safety.” Proverbs 3:24 and Psalm 121:3–4 are also widely used.
What should I pray when I can’t sleep?
Keep it short: name what is worrying you, give it to God (1 Peter 5:7), and repeat a verse such as Psalm 4:8 slowly with your breathing.
Is it a lack of faith if I can’t sleep?
No. Sleeplessness has many causes, including stress, health and hormones. Scripture invites you to bring your fears to God, not to feel guilty about them.
When should I see a doctor about sleep?
If poor sleep lasts more than a few weeks or affects your daily life, talk to a doctor. Prayer and medical help can go together.
